How do i write an essay?

I am supposed to write an essay on how racism relates to the theme in "To Kill A Mockingbird" and i'm completely lost. ive asked the teacher for more help, but she talks like she thinks she's shakespeare and what she says makes no sence what so ever, how the heck do you write a thesis statement?
