Pros and Cons.. Please share your ideas!!?

What are the pros and cons of a condition where a student gives first priority to grades and not actually learning new things from a course book? Please share me what you think... how has grading system enveloped the mind of a student? If you can give me some references such as articles on web then it would be perfect. I also want to go through them.
